Born in 1875 (Edward Alexander Crowley) was an occultist among other things such as a poet, mountaineer, ceremonial magician, novelist and a painter. He is also the founder of Thelma, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century.
He was born to a wealthy Christian family (Plymouth Brethren) in Royal Leamington Spa (Warwickshire). Even though his parents were very religious he rejected his Christian faith to pursue western esotericism. He studied at the University of Cambridge, where he focused his efforts on mountaineering and poetry, this lead to several publications. A few biographers say that this is where he was recruited into a British intelligence agency, suggesting that he remained a spy throughout his lifetime.
In 1898 he became a part of the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, here he was trained in ceremonial magic by Samuel MacGregor Mathers and Allan Bennett, he then moved to Boleskine House in Scotland, and went mountaineering in Mexico with Oscar Eckenstein, before studying Hindu and Buddhist practices in India. He married Rose Edith Kelly and they had a honeymoon 1904 in Egypt (Cairo), this is where Aleister claimed that he was contacted by Aiwass (a supernatural entity), this entity would “whisper” in his hear, and did so for 3 days (April 8, 9, 10 1904) the contents of the whispers where the rules/laws for “The Book of the Law” this is a sacred text that served as the basis for Thelema. This sacred text announced the beginning of Æon of Horus, The Book declared that its followers should adhere to the code of “Do what thou wilt” and seek to align themselves with their will through the practice of magick.
Aleister paid a visit to India and China, he also tried to climb Kanchenjunga in 1095, after that he returned to Britain and this is where he started to attract attention as a prolific author of poetry, novels, and occult literature. In 1907 he co-founded a Thelemite order (A∴A∴) with the help of George Cecil Jones through which they propagated the religion. After spending time in Algeria, in 1912 he was initiated into another esoteric order, the German-based Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), he then rose to become the leader of the British branch, he then reformulated it, in accordance to his Thelemite beliefs. Thanks to the O.T.O Thelemite groups were established in Britain, Australia and North America. Aleister spent the First World War in the U.S, there he took up painting and campaigned for the German war effort against Britain, but he later revealed that he had infiltrated the pro-German movement as a means to assist the British intelligence. In 1920 he bought a house in Cefalù Sicily and established it as a religious commune (Abbey of Thelema), this is where he lived with various followers, and they would perform rituals and various sex acts there. His libertine lifestyle led to denunciations in the British press, and the Italian government evicted him in 1923. He divided the following two decades between France, Germany, and England, and continued to promote Thelema until his death.
